Holloman’s 49th Medical Wing pharmacy unveiled its newest option for patients to dispose of unused medications at a ceremony in the pharmacy at 7:15 a.m. Oct. 14, 2016.

The new medication return container, known as a MedSafe, will assist in preventing medication abuse, accidental poisonings, and environmental contamination from unusable or unwanted medications from patient’s homes.

Anyone can use the service from active duty to retirees.

One retiree and pharmacy regular, Matilda Smith was on hand at the ceremony to help unveil the new return container.

“They really do a great job helping patients and providing support to us,” said Smith, who was the first person to officially return unused medication as part of the ceremony. “I feel incredibly honored to be here and be part of this great program.”

The MedSafe will be available to any pharmacy or medical group patrons during normal clinic hours.

The 49th MDG pharmacy team has worked for over a year to acquire a MedSafe for Holloman.

“This will give patients an opportunity to safely dispose of unusable, unwanted medications,” said Maj. Rebekah, the 49th MDG pharmacist. “This service has been implemented throughout the Air Force. We have never had one here and we are excited to provide this for anyone who walks through our doors.”
