Airmen from the 49th Civil Engineer Squadron Structures Flight have recently begun building a new playground here at Holloman for families across the base to enjoy.

The new playground, to be finished by the end of this month, is located across from Desert Lanes Bowling Alley and the Fitness and Sports Center and is the first to be built from the ground up by 49 CES.

The playground is being built because there aren't many areas for children to play on Holloman, said Master Sgt. Tomas Garcia, 49 CES structures planning NCOIC. It will include two play areas, one for children ages one to five and the other for ages five to 12. The play area will be close to where adults can supervise their children.

This is a way for CE to give quality of life back to the base, said Master Sgt. William Deakin, 49 CES structures.

The playground cost more than $140,000, including man-hours and equipment. The funds are coming from 49 CES operation and maintenance funds and wing funds, said Sergeant Deakin.

Though the playground has been in the works for sometime, the structures flight made it a point to have the playground done before the upcoming deployment.

The 49 CES structures flight made safety a big issue for this project.

The wing safety office will accomplish a full inspection of the completed playground and identify any unsafe items or issues, said Sergeant Deakin.

The new playground will include several slides, a rock-climbing apparatus, a steering wheel and a tic-tac-toe board.
