49th Fighter Wing officials offer the following tips to avoid heat and sun-related illnesses during this year's open house

Don't get too much sun
The following are some heat disorders and their symptoms:

- Sunburn: Redness and pain. Severe cases may include swelling of skin, blisters, fever and headache
- Heat cramps: Painful spasms usually in muscles of legs and abdomen. Heavy sweating.
- Heat exhaustion: Heavy sweating and weakness. Skin may turn cold, pale and clammy. Fainting and vomiting may occur.
- Heat or sun stroke: Skin will become hot and dry. Pulse will become rapid and strong and body temperature rises.

Drink Water
Officials suggest drinking at least a cup of water every 30 minutes. Alcohol is not a good beverage choice to replace lost body water.

Wear Appropriate Clothing and Sunscreen
Officials suggest wearing lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing. Use sunscreen of at least SPF rating 15 or higher and to apply it 30 minutes before going outdoors. Reapply frequently.

Eat Right
Avoid hot foods and heavy meals as they add heat to the body
