Document Retention in cases of restricted and unrestricted reports of sexual assault. Effective 16 Dec 2011, the sexual assault investigative reports for unrestricted reports will be retained for 50 years from the date the sexual assault investigation was closed. For restricted reports a separate record retention system designed to honor and respect the service member's desire for confidentiality shall be used. If a sexual assault forensic exam is performed, that information will be retained for 5 years. The SARC will also retain the DD Form 2910, the form used to annotate the restricted reporting option. This allows for additional time for the victim to come forward and convert the restricted report to an unrestricted report.
