Military Saves Week kicked off here February 27, 2017.

This week is an annual opportunity for organizations to promote good savings behavior and a chance for individuals to assess their own saving status.

As part of Military Saves Week 2017, the Airman and Family Readiness Center is spreading the saving message, and urging the community to participate in Military Saves Week and take the Military Saves Pledge.

“This week we are trying to teach Airmen to set a goal and then start saving for what they like,” said Maura Solis, the Air Force Aid Society officer at the AFRC here.

To help people save more successfully and encourage more people to save, the AFRC is hosting various financial classes led by special guest Miguel Hernandez, an accredited financial counselor.

“I help restore a person’s credit liability, encourage them to save and formulate a plan for retirement,” Hernandez said. “We start with setting some intermediate goals then we set short-term goals and, once those short-term goals come to fruition, then we can start thinking about long term goals.”

Although Military Saves Week targets military members, the AFRC encourages everyone to come out and take advantage of the financial classes and discussions.

“We want everyone to start saving,” Solis said. “We have several contractors on base, so even giving them the opportunity to start a savings plan and reaching for the stars would be great.”

Military Saves Week is coordinated by America Saves and the Consumer Federation of America in partnership with the Department of Defense.
