Renovation of Airman’s Attic Published Aug. 18, 2011 By Airman 1st Class Anthony M. Ward 49th Wing Public Affairs HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- After approximately two months of renovation, the Airman's Attic here held its grand reopening from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. August 3. The renovation of the Attic, which was funded by the Holloman Officers Spouses Organization, was the result of a lack of space in the building, and involved the installation of new shelving in the facility. "The storage area we had was inefficient," said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. James Bosch, 49th Medical Services Squadron, NCO in charge of diagnostic imaging and military liaison for the Holloman Enlisted Spouses Organization, which operates the Attic. "It didn't have the capacity to hold the amount of donations we receive, which is quite significant compared to a lot of bases. The new shelving allows us to maximize the space we have to provide more items to the public." The Airman's Attic offers a wide variety of free items to the Holloman community, which includes, but is not limited to, household goods, clothing, electronics, miscellaneous items and large items such as furniture. A freezer was recently acquired for the Attic, which will allow for a greater distribution of perishable items than the previous Airman's Attic. "Sometimes we receive goods from the Commissary that are still good, but for lack of storage space, have to be gotten rid of," said Bosch. "We redistribute those goods as well." Bosch said the new version of the Attic is a great resource for every Airman at Holloman. "The Airman's Attic is one of the best kept secrets in the Air Force," said Bosch. "If you're not utilizing the Attic, you're wasting money. The Attic has so much to offer, especially to Airmen such as brand new combat boots and military uniforms. I haven't paid for a uniform because I get my yearly allowance from the Attic." Offering many benefits to the Holloman community, the Attic is a highly used facility and is always in need of volunteers to help continue its operation. "The Airman's Attic is run by volunteers," said Janice Bosch, Airman's Attic manager. "We could never have enough people to help and without volunteers there could be no Airman's Attic." Bosch said with more volunteers, the Attic would be able to operate more frequently. The Attic is open Tuesdays and Thursdays to active duty ranks E-1 through E-6 and the second Saturday of every month to all active, Guard, and Reserve servicemembers, German Air Force and military dependents from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. For more information on the Airman's Attic, its renovation or if you are interested in volunteering, stop in at the Attic, located next to the Airman and Family Readiness Center, or call 575-572-6064.
