Are you one of the many people who believes there's nothing to do in the Tularosa Basin? Are you tired of the same routine every weekend? Are you looking to get away for a little rest and relaxation? Well, the Ruidoso community is offering special rates of up to 30 percent off at participating establishments for active duty and retired military personnel.

"The concept is to provide discounts for the military to show we appreciate what they do for us and to boost our occupancy and tourism in the off season," said Mr. Steve Tally, director of tourism.

The program goes from now until the end of April and will be revisited and renewed for the summer season if it's a success, said Mr. Tally.

"We knew there were businesses that have offered military discounts," said Mr. Brad Treptow, Ruidoso Valley Chamber of Commerce executive director. "If asked or if approached, they would honor something. We wanted to document who they are so people could understand the range it includes."

Mr. Treptow believes New Mexico has much to gain from what's going on with Holloman, Cannon, and Kirtland Air Force Base, along with Fort Bliss and the surrounding areas.

Tourism has been the heart and soul of Ruidoso's economy for years. Ruidoso receives about a million overnight visitors a year, said Mr. Treptow. Traditionally, Ruidoso's tourist season is from Memorial Day through Labor Day but now extends to more than 10 months a year.

Ruidoso and its surrounding areas offer skiing, fishing, horseracing, golfing, biking, hiking, museums and many other activities for all interests and tastes.

"With new people coming in, chances are very few would know about Ruidoso," said Mr. Treptow. "This is a chance to inform and educate them about our community, what we have to offer, and encourage them to visit as often as they can."

Businesses participating are ski areas, lodging, retailers and restaurants
