Special Waterfowl hunt approaching
HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. --
Fall is in the air and many of us look forward to this time of year because of the opportunities it offers for outdoor recreation.
For residents of the Holloman area, one of these opportunities is a special Waterfowl hunt at the Lake Holloman Wildlife Area beginning Oct. 30 and ending Jan. 30, 2011.
The hunts will take place only on the following days: Oct. 30-31; Nov. 13-14 and 25-28; Dec. 4-5, 18-19 and 24-26; and Jan. 8-9 and 22-23. Shooting hours are from one half hour before sunrise until 12 p.m.
Waterfowl hunting is currently allowed for the general public at Lake Holloman in accordance with Federal and state Waterfowl hunting regulations, but only on certain weekends and federal holidays with limits generally following the annual federal framework.
The Lagoon G portion of the wetlands complex is open for waterfowl hunting to military personnel only, again only on specified weekends and federal holidays.
Hunters are encouraged to avoid taking Fulvous and Black-Bellied Whistling ducks, Wood ducks, Long-Tailed ducks, White-Winged and Surf Scoters ducks, Common Goldeneye and all species of Merganser in the Lake Holloman hunting area and report any sightings of these species to 49th Civil Engineer Squadron Natural Resources office due to their rarity. It is not legal to take Sandhill Cranes, and upland portions of the Lake Holloman Wildlife Area are closed to all types of upland game and big game hunting.
All Waterfowl hunters must have a valid New Mexico State hunting license with a permit number for the mandatory Federal Migratory Bird hunting and Conservation Stamp, and proof of completion of an approved hunter education course. Military hunters must complete a safety brief given by Wing Safety before hunting at Lagoon G.
All discharged shotgun shells and other litter must be picked up and packed out and retrieval of downed birds is required, with a fine of $200 plus $50 or more per bird for wanton waste of migratory birds. Holloman reserves the right to close the Lake Holloman area to hunting whenever security is a concern.
Please be safe, enjoy the hunting experience and introduce someone else to the excitement that only comes from spending a day outdoors.
Be sure to check out the Waterfowl hunt regulations here and for more information on training requirements or a hunting map, contact the 49th CES Natural Resources office at 575-572-6685.
