Team Holloman,
As we move into spring you will see the phrase "text, talk, walk" tied to
the 49th Wing's new Distracted Driver Campaign.
This campaign aims to address the hazards of distracted driving on Holloman, to include texting and talking on the phone without a hands-free device.
All drivers on base are to follow safety and driving regulations, and will be held accountable for their actions. Keep texting and talking for home, not while driving, or you could end up walking to work each day.
You may even have your driving privileges suspended on base if you decide to text or talk on your cell phone without a hands-free device while driving.
Holloman Security Forces Squadron has established the following policy in coordination with distracted driving:
- For the first offense, a 2-5 day license suspension of driving privileges on base
- For the second offense, a 2-4 week license suspension of driving privileges on base
- For the third offense, a 2-12-month license suspension of driving privileges on base
We need you to devote your full attention to the road.
Think of all the people on base, the children at recess, walking to and from school, veterans on their way to the Medical Group for their annual check-up, or even your wingmen, and all the Airmen who commute to and from work every day. Don't be the distracted driver that ruins their day, or yours for that matter.
We must commit ourselves to safety on and off base when it comes to driving. Always be attentive and on the lookout.
You see distracted driving campaigns everywhere, you watch the videos, you hear the stories, but what about here at Holloman? Do you know how many people were pulled over recently?
Below are the number of citations on base between January-March as a result of distracted driving:
- Two for cellular phone usage
- One for driving while impaired
- 17 for excessive speed in school zone
To add, there were 13 vehicle accidents caused by distracted driving.
You all are outstanding Airmen that perform your job above and beyond the U.S. Air Force standards.
You should be proud to serve in the world's greatest Air Force, and I am proud to serve with you.
We cannot afford to lose any of you because of the choices that you make while driving.
Though, I have a feeling this will be a better year on base for driving.
Moving forward I believe Team Holloman will see a decrease in distracted driving, and an increase in personal accountability, safety and following the rules while driving. With all of you we can accomplish that.
Above all else, remember to keep texting and talking for home, not while driving, or you could end up walking to work each day.
It is up to you, all of you, to keep Holloman safe, and to remember the
phrase, "text, talk, walk."
