5/13/2011 - HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- With the weather in the Tularosa Basin warming up, the 49th Force Support Squadron held a Spring Fling May 6 for members of Team Holloman before the hundred-degree temperatures of summer arrive.
The Spring Fling was an all-day event held to celebrate Operational Readiness Inspection Excellence, resiliency and safety, and also allowed Team Holloman to enjoy various activities throughout the day at the Domenici Fitness and Sports Center, Vandenberg and Johnson Fields, Steinhoff Park and other FSS facilities.
"(The Spring Fling) is really to thank everybody for all of their efforts over the past six months," said Col. David Sullivan, 49th Wing vice commander. "When the time came and the ACC IG team was on base, we all rallied together and showed them what Holloman was all about. We had good team spirit and were all in for the ORI, so this is to tell Team Holloman thank you."
The day started with a wing-wide one-and-a-half mile fun run followed by resiliency briefings mandatory for all of Holloman's 23 years old and younger military personnel.
Events held at the Domenici Fitness and Sports Center included a basketball skills competition, a 3-point shootout and a dodge ball tournament. Johnson and Vandenberg Fields featured a home-run derby and the Chiefs versus Eagles annual softball game.
After the sporting events, Steinhoff Park was home to the Fun Fest portion of the Spring Fling, which included kid's carnival games, go-kart races, a tight rope course, paintball target shooting, a bicycle obstacle course, free burgers, a free burrito sampling and a Salsa contest.
To close the Spring Fling, there was live music at the Raptor's Nest Officer's Club from the Single Tree Country Western Band and Holloman's own HO Band.
The 49th Wing command chief, Chief Master Sgt. Gerardo Tapia, shared his thoughts about the day and why it's important for the fightin' 49'ers to blow off steam in a controlled environment following the base's ORI.
"Today's a special day for Holloman," he said. "Our Airmen worked extremely hard, so we wanted them to relax for a day and have them come together so we could show them our appreciation. We're still riding the big morale booster that the 'Excellent' rating from our ORI provided, so today we have a lot to celebrate."
