Medal of Honor
Mary Edwards Walker is the first and only woman in history to earn the Congressional Medal of Honor. When the Civil War broke out, she went to Washington and tried to join the Union Army. She was denied a commission as a medical officer but volunteered anyway, serving unpaid as an acting assistant surgeon, the first female surgeon in the U.S. Army. (photo courtesy of U.S. Army)
