Buffalo Soldiers
In order to settle problems in 19th Century New Mexico, the U.S. Army called upon a group of recently freed black men to form the 9th and 10th Cavalries, which subsequently became known as "Buffalo Soldiers." The men were given this name by their Native American adversaries because of their toughness and dark skin. (Courtesy of 49th Fighter Wing History Office)
