The last day of school is approaching and students will be out and about taking part in summer activities. However, until May 22, all drivers on Holloman Air Force Base are asked to slow down and observe the posted speed limits in the school zones.

"Throughout the year, we've had problems with individuals speeding in the school zone," said Mr. Michael Gann, 49th Fighter Wing Ground Safety manager. "Security Forces personnel have ticketed numerous speeders recently and they will continue to monitor the school zones until the year is complete. Remember kids will be kids, watch out for someone else's child like you would watch out for your own."

Penalties for speeding in school zones on Holloman are driving privileges suspended for five days. Drivers are required to take a mandatory driver's safety course and points are assessed against your license.

The times of operation for the school zones on Holloman are between 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Mr. Gann said it is important to realize the warning lights are sometimes difficult to see, especially when the sun is shining directly on them, but drivers should maintain situational awareness to determine what time of day it is and whether they are in a school zone.

Vehicle operators need to reduce their speed to 15 m.p.h. and remember when children are present and near a crosswalk, the driver must yield to the children from the time they see them until they have completely crossed the road.
