The Holloman Air Force Base Tax Center is now open for business through April 15, the last day income taxes can be regularly filed without penalty. Appointments will be accepted from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The Tax Center is closed on Fridays and federal holidays. The Tax Center is located in building 29, the Wing Headquarters, on First Street next to Heritage Park. Upon entering the front of the building, go upstairs and make a right. The Tax Center is at the end of the hallway on the left. Please note, however, that we will be minimally manned Feb. 18-19 for an Air Force-level inspection. We will also be minimally manned during the operational readiness exercise from Feb. 23-27.

The Tax Center is open to all active duty military members, dependents and retirees. Services are limited to those making a gross income of $100,000 or less and available only through appointment.

Although the filing of federal income taxes can be intimidating, volunteers from all sections of the Holloman community have answered the call to assist Airmen and their families this season. Each volunteer has completed IRS-approved training and is now certified as a Volunteer Income Tax Assistant (VITA). Every VITA has IRS information readily available for customers on topics such as deductions, the Earned Income Credit and the Additional Child Credit.

Once you schedule an appointment, keep in mind that your VITA will need copies of the following: social security numbers for the taxpayer, spouse and all dependents; a voided check if you desire direct deposit of your return; childcare and daycare expenses as well as the name, address and social security number of the childcare provider; W-2 forms from each employer (active duty members may obtain this from https://mypay.dfas.mil); 1099R forms for retirees; interest and dividend statements; and proof of any other income.

For those itemizing, plan to provide your mortgage interest statement, real estate taxes paid and a charitable giving statement. If you are not sure what you can deduct, bring a copy of whatever information you can collect and the volunteers will do their best to maximize your return. If you are filing a tax return under a Power of Attorney, bring an extra copy of this document as it will not be returned to you.

The Tax Center will only prepare jointly filed returns for deployed members' spouses if they can produce a power of attorney or IRS form 2848. Also, business owners should note that the VITAs will not prepare Schedule C or C-EZ. If you think this rule may apply to you, please see http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040sce.pdf for further information.
