The Holloman Aero Club hosted the first ever Aviation Camp, open to youth of all ages, at Holloman's Aero Center, Oct. 22.

The students participated in two days of ground school classes and finished the camp with a one-hour flight with a certified flight instructor.

The curriculum consisted of information on aviation careers and aircraft flight dynamics. Each student was able to log their actual flight time in their very own logbook.

The students learned about the many career options in aviation and how everyone works together to make aviation possible. Pilots, mechanics, air traffic controllers, equipment specialists, dispatchers, flight attendants and security personnel were just a few of the careers mentioned.

The Alamogordo Civil Air Patrol (CAP) squadron commander came to speak to the students about CAP history and membership opportunities. The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Young Eagles program was also mentioned.

The students had a chance to ask questions. A few questions that were answered included how an airplane fly's, what a pilot does in an emergency and what makes the propeller turn.

Before their flight, all students participated in performing a full preflight inspection with the instructor. They even got a chance to practice taxiing and took the controls on their very first flight.

The next Aviation Camp is scheduled for April 2009. Private Pilot ground school begins in February.
