Service Before Self is the remarkable accomplishments produced by today's Airman, not only making a great sacrifice to their country and family but having the servitude to volunteer in their local community. The 49th MXG Airmen came together to help "Keep Alamogordo Beautiful" with various volunteering and support to the local Alamogordo community.

The personnel improvement project event was a widespread clean up with the city's parks, adopted highways, the relief route and other public areas. The 49th MXG came together for a total of more than 840 community hours, $36,000.00 of manpower and $ 15,000 of materials and project equipment to build.

Col George Torres, 49th Maintenance Commander said "The key is to build a great relationship within the community.

When we come to a base, we are citizens in that community," he said. Being able to have the opportunity to give back to the people who give so much to you and support you is always a great feeling and also provides a sense of honor and dignity to your community, state and country."

The two month improvement project consists of 120 volunteers, which are broken into 15-person teams. One team will work two consecutive day's and on the third day, another team takes over and the process is repeated.

"The appreciation of the American service members is great, but without the folks not wearing the uniform. Backing us there would be no motivation to do our job, and we would not be able to do our job, said Colonel Torres.

The community definitely appreciated and supported the 49th MXG during their two month personnel improvement project "Keep Alamogordo Beautiful"

"We had people stopping by asking who we were, what we were doing and why we were doing it, and a lot of people offering thanks, so it's already reflecting in the community," said Technical Sgt. Robin Walker.

The 49th MXG also planted trees, built a small park on Panorama, and provided landscaping for the Fire Department on 10th street, and the Alamogordo zoo.

"I've lived here in Alamogordo for eight years," said Sergeant Walker. "For me Alamogordo is home and, basically, we're trying to set the example for the community. If you take a little time to volunteer, we can make big things like this happen."

Cindy Peirpoint a representative of Alamogordo said because of the outstanding work done by the 49th MXG in Alamogordo, other cities are trying to be affiliates of "Keep America beautiful" and "New Mexico clean and beautiful.

For all the volunteers hard work and rewarded them with a barbecue at Steinfield park.
