The 49th Fighter Wing Chapel volunteers have given the children of Holloman a new twist on their summer activities with vacation bible school and this summer's theme "Power Lab".

Vacation Bible School "Power Lab" mixes science and bible lessons into one fun event for the children" said Mrs. Kelley Sexton, Protestant religious education director.

The children participating in the vacation Bible school attend five classes a day where they learn one verse and one lesson from the Bible. They also perform a science lab each day of the week said Mrs. Sexton.

"The Power Lab not only allows the children to do hands-on work with science projects, but to sing and dance to music and learn biblical scriptures in the process," said Capt. Olga Westfall, Protestant chaplain.

The Power lab is open to all the children of Holloman not just those that attend the chapel she said.

"The kids are excited and love it. Even my son who doesn't speak English has fun," said Chaplain Westfall.

"We do a lot of arts and crafts," said Dionna Morales. "I don't know what I'll do for the rest of the summer but I liked here a lot."

The age group of the Power Lab attendees ranges from 5 to 12.

"The Power Lab provides a challenge for the children but they still have fun and they understand the points and lessons sometimes better than the adults do," said Mrs. Sexton

There are more than 20 Protestant and Catholic volunteers helping with the Vacation Bible School, ranging from parents in the Holloman community, to activity-duty enlisted members and officers.

"The children are great! They loved me and we connected well," said Airman 1st Class Catherine Gates of the 49th Force Support Squadron.

The Chapel sponsors the VBS every year at the beginning of summer after school lets out.

The school was from June 2- 6 from 9 a.m to 12 p.m.
