Flu vaccines available at 49 MDG Published Dec. 12, 2007 By 49th Medical Group HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- The 49th Medical Group has received FluMist, the nasal spray influenza vaccine. Flu vaccination with FluMist is available to healthy individuals, ages 5 years to 49 years old. There is also a limited amount of the injectable vaccination available. You can reduce your risk of contracting the flu through hand washing. Brisk hand washing with warm water and soap for 15-30 seconds is the best way to prevent spread of viral illness. When soap and water aren't available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer following the manufacturer's directions. Should you become ill, you can decrease the likelihood of passing the virus on to others by covering your mouth and nose with a disposable tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw the tissue in the trash immediately - don't leave it lying on the coffee table! Rest and treating the symptoms of the flu are normally all that is required; however, you should seek medical attention if you develop difficulty breathing, chest pain, or a high fever that does not come down with aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol). For information on the status of the availability of injectable flu vaccine or for scheduling a group visit, please call the immunization clinic at 572-7188.
