Beginning Aug. 10, the school speed zones will be in effect on base from 7:15-8:00 a.m. and 3:00-3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The speed limit will be 15 mph during these times on First St., Arnold St., Santa Fe Dr., and Arizona Ave.

The speed limit changes are not expected to influence other base traffic.

"There shouldn't be any delays at the gate," said Tim Cahill, 49th Wing occupational safety manager. "Just look for the yellow flashing lights and slow down."

In the past, Holloman has displayed the yellow lights indicating the start of the school zone a week before school starts to prepare drivers and help prevent accidents.

"People are not being observant," said Cahill. "It's the distracted driving that causes accidents."

To help prevent accidents, security forces will be strictly enforcing driving standards in school zones.

If cited, motorists may temporarily lose on-base driving privileges.

Holloman schools officially begin Aug. 18.
