Friends of Holloman Published Feb. 10, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Chase Cannon 49th Wing Public Affairs HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., is preparing to do something that no other base in the Air Force currently does. A program has been developed to give non-Department of Defense civilians access to some of the base's recreational facilities. This new program will be called Friends of Holloman, and it is designed to offer members of the surrounding communities an opportunity to enjoy base facilities. The facilities that will be open to participants in the Friends of Holloman program are Desert Lanes Bowling Center, Desert Sands Club and Apache Mesa Golf Course. "I'm excited about welcoming our neighbors in to use some of our first-class recreation facilities. The bonds between the base and our surrounding communities are the best I've seen in 25 years in the Air Force, and programs like Friends of Holloman will further cement those bonds of friendship," said Col. Kevin Bennett, 49th Mission Support Group commander. Friends of Holloman is a free membership, which will allow members onto the base during the operating hours of the participating facilities. The membership card will last for a year. Those who apply for a Friends of Holloman card will go through the same application process as our base contractors and must submit to a background check to be cleared for base access. To apply for this card you must be at least 15 years of age. Those under 15 may be allowed onto base with supervision by an adult 18 years or older. Once allowed on base, Friends of Holloman will be given a map of the facilities they are allowed to use and areas that are considered off limits. Regular precautions will also be in place to ensure safety, such as routine vehicle searches at the gate and patrols by Holloman Security Forces. This program will strengthen our long-standing bond with the community while enabling these recreational facilities more funding to stay in operation for Holloman families. For more information on Friends of Holloman please call the Force Support Squadron Marketing Department at 575-572-5597 or visit our Visitor's Center off Highway 70 any day from 6:00am to 4:30pm to apply.
