The 49th Civil Engineer Squadron participated in the annual Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 6-12, 2019, on Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico.

Every year, during the week of October 9th, Fire Prevention Week is observed throughout the United States and Canada.

49th CES firefighters visited schools, hosted competitions and provided educational materials to raise fire safety awareness.

“Our goal is to ensure our base populace knows how to prevent a fire in their home,” said Richard Garrison, 49th CES assistant fire inspector. “Fire prevention is not just this week, it is all year. We’re trying to get people in that mindset.”

The 49th CES also conducted fire drills at the elementary school and Child Development Center on base, and will close this weeks’ festivities with a parade at 10 a.m., Oct 12, on base.

Since this is the latest of many fire prevention weeks here, the firefighters have been able to see the results of their efforts every year.

“(Fire Prevention Week) has been very effective, especially for the younger kids at school,” said Garrison. “They like to see Sparky, so we use him to get messages across. Before giving the students fire safety information at our tours, we asked a few questions and they all seemed pretty knowledgeable on the subject already.”
