The commissary at Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., is scheduled to hold a family math night April 3 from 3 to 7 p.m. to help elementary and middle school students learn math skills and help them become more excited about math.

Children in kindergarten through eighth grades attending school at Holloman Air Force Base, including the German school and home-schooled children, may attend with their parents. The students will be given a worksheet with grade-appropriate math problems to complete. Each problem will require the student to examine, analyze or measure something in the commissary. Teachers, the school principals and commissary staff will help guide the students and their parents through their assignment, all completed in the commissary.

Commissary vendors, who supply products sold in commissaries, will provide refreshments, drawings for prizes and a goody bag for each student.

Counting, weighting and measuring are a normal part of grocery shopping, making the commissary a natural and exciting location for children to learn and practice math skills. The Holloman Commissary and the base elementary and middle schools are working together on this event to bring math to life for students at Holloman Air Force Base.

"If we can get kids more excited about math and help them enjoy math, we just might make a positive impact on their lives," said Stephanie Guel, assistant store director at the Holloman Air Force Base Commissary.
