The Viking Challenge comes to Holloman Published Sept. 13, 2012 By Airman 1st Class Daniel Liddicoet 49th Wing Public Affairs HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- The Viking Challenge is a 24-hour run-walk event scheduled to take place on the outdoor track at the Domenici Fitness Center Oct. 12 and 13. The event provides an opportunity for Airmen to raise money for the Holloman First Sergeants' Food Locker -- a Combined Federal Campaign organization dedicated to helping Airmen with financial difficulties put food on the table. Throughout the 24-hour period, teams of up 10 people will attempt to complete as many laps on the track as possible. "The Viking Challenge is really just a time for fun," said Staff Sgt. Christine Anderson, 49th Operations Group knowledge operator, and president of the Viking Challenge committee. "I see it as a time for Airmen to come together and enjoy themselves while reaching out to help their community." Outside of the athletic aspect of the Viking Challenge, there will also be camping, food and music. Each team will have a tent set up to serve as their base of operations when switching runners in and out of the relay. The atmosphere of the Viking Challenge has been designed to be as enjoyable as possible, and children and family are encouraged to come and join in on the fun, said Anderson. "This is the first year we've done the Viking Challenge here at Holloman," said Anderson. "I got the idea while I was stationed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. We had such a good time participating in it there that I decided to try and bring the opportunity to Holloman." Since the Viking Challenge will be taking place during the Halloween season, participants will also be encouraged to wear costumes to add to the festivities. According to Anderson, awards are expected to be given out to the team with the most laps completed as well as the person wearing the best costume. Pledges can also be sought per lap and per mile to help support the First Sergeants' Food Locker. The Viking Challenge is open to both on- and off-base participants. Anyone interested in participating can register a team until Oct. 1 at the Domenici Fitness Center for $50. For more information call (575) 572-3229.
