Holloman to host community meeting in Cloudcroft Published June 11, 2012 By 49th Wing Public Affairs HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Holloman will host a meeting in Cloudcroft, N.M., June 14 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Zenith Park Pavilion to engage the mountain communities about the F-22 Raptor training and the reasons there are sonic booms. Holloman Air Force Base is the home of the 49th Wing which operates the F-22. The base is one of three which trains and operates this state-of-the-art aircraft. As a result of the training accomplished here there has been an increase in sonic booms over our areas of operation. During this event, Col. David Krumm, 49th Wing commander, will discuss the F-22, the areas of operation and the reasons sonic booms occur. Citizens will also be afforded the opportunity to ask questions in order to better familiarize themselves with the mission and Holloman in general. The expansive range and training areas around Holloman Air Force Base makes this a prime location for pilots to exercise real-world scenarios that will greatly enhance their abilities when called upon during wartime operations. Although pilots may be flying in an approved zone, various atmospheric conditions like weather and temperature can vary the distance a sonic boom travels, and areas not normally affected may experience the impact. The 49th Wing works to limit the effect operations have on the communities in the Tularosa Basin to the fullest extent possible. We ask that you make arrangements to attend this meeting and have your opinion heard.
