The Holloman Tax Center, located at the Community Activities Center, Bldg 325, is now open to eligible members of Team Holloman until April 27.

The tax center will be available to all active-duty service members, retirees, and dependents Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., but will be closed on Air Combat Command family days and federal holidays. Department of Defense civilians should call for eligibility.

"Holloman's Tax Center has been around for more than 30 years," said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Jamie Garris, 49th Wing Judge Advocate paralegal. "It was created to assist active-duty and retired members of the Holloman community with a free filing service."

Created for the convenience of members of Team Holloman, the tax center has been a huge benefit for the community, saving members time and money.

"Last year, the Holloman tax assistance program assisted with more than 2,200 federal and state returns, most of which were electronically filled," said Garris. "This saved Holloman personnel $172,000 in tax preparation fees and returned nearly $2,438,000 in tax refunds."

Those wishing to file their taxes through Holloman's tax center should bring their 2011 W-2, last year's tax information, their Social Security card and those of any dependents, and all other tax-related documents, including but not limited to daycare, home and bank information.

Members of Team Holloman who are currently deployed will have a six-month filing extension. Also, anyone whose spouse will be deployed during the tax season and wishes for someone to file their taxes for them will need to go to the legal office, located in Building 29, to get a power of attorney, giving their spouse or designated individual power to file on their behalf.

To file taxes at the Holloman Tax Center, call to schedule an appointment. Doing so will ensure faster service and allows volunteers in the Tax Center to budget their time effectively based on the number of returns they have. The Holloman Tax Center will assist as many members of Team Holloman as possible, but those filling their taxes there should remember to be patient.

"Being a unit tax advisor or working at the tax center takes a lot of time and effort, and is strictly a volunteer basis," said Garris. "We have four preparation stations at the center, plus volunteers in their respective units."

"We are all volunteers, many new at this concept," said Garris. "Please be patient and we will assist you as best as we can."
