The Holloman Tax Center will open for business Jan. 31 and will remain open until April 15 to all active duty military members, dependents and retirees making a gross income of $100,000 or less by appointment only.

Appointments will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, and beginning Jan. 25, members can call the Tax Center at 572-1040 to schedule an appointment. Appointments may also be made by contacting the Legal Office at 572-1197 until Jan. 31.

This year, the Tax Center will be located in the Community Activity Center on Idaho Avenue across from the Base Exchange. Upon entering the front of the building, go around the reception desk and to the left. The Tax Center is at the end of the hallway on the right in the Coyote Conference Room.

Although the filing of federal income taxes can be intimidating, volunteers from all sections of the Holloman community have answered the call to assist Airmen and their families this season.

Each volunteer has completed IRS-approved training and is now certified as a Volunteer Income Tax Assistant. Every VITA has IRS information readily available for customers on topics such as deductions, the Earned Income Credit and the First Time Homebuyer Credit.

Once you schedule an appointment, keep in mind your VITA will need copies of the following: social security numbers for the taxpayer, spouse and all dependents; a voided check if you desire direct deposit of your return; childcare and daycare expenses as well as the name, address and social security number of the childcare provider; W-2 forms from each employer (active duty members may obtain this from https://mypay.dfas.mil); 1099R forms for retirees; interest and dividend statements; and proof of any other income.

For those itemizing, plan to provide your mortgage interest statement, real estate taxes paid and a charitable giving statement. If you are not sure what you can deduct, bring a copy of whatever information you can collect and the volunteers will do their best to maximize your return. If you are filing a tax return under a Power of Attorney, bring an extra copy of this document as it will not be returned to you.

The Tax Center will only prepare jointly filed returns for deployed members' spouses if they can produce a power of attorney or IRS form 2848. Also, business owners should note that the VITAs will not prepare Schedule C or C-EZ. If you think this rule may apply to you, please see http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040sce.pdf for further information.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call the Tax Center at 572-1040 starting Jan. 25.
