More than 850 members of Team Holloman showed up to partake in some friendly competition during the annual Sports Day event, Sept. 19, hosted by the Domenici Fitness and Sports Center.

Squadrons throughout the base challenged each other in a number of events to earn the bragging rights of "Sports Day Champions" and the ultimate prize: the Commander's Cup.

"We had a lot of entries for each event from all squadrons on base," said Bradley George, Domenici Fitness and Sports Center sports director. "One of my goals this year ... was to increase the participation level in all the sports offered and I feel we have accomplished this goal. Now we must move from here, get better at what we do and the programs will continue to grow."

The day kicked off with the traditional Wing run, attended by approximately 2,000 Airmen and civilians, and continued with basketball, racquetball, skeet shooting, volleyball and bowling tournaments; a 9-hole golf shoot out, homerun derby, swim relay, bed race and dodge ball competition; and of course, the crowd-favorite and finale event, the Tug of War.

This year, the Sports Day event coincided with the U.S. Air Force's 63rd birthday, and during the awards ceremony, Team Holloman celebrated the milestone with music, food and a birthday cake decorated in red, white and blue.
