On June 12, the Airman & Family Readiness Center, in conjunction with the Exceptional Family Member Program, hosted an event for children with special needs at Steinhoff Park.

The event, which was called "Special Kids Day," linked special needs children and their families with community partners who provided information on special needs programs, said Bob Berger, a community readiness consultant at the A&FRC.

"The event was a real success because we had a lot of volunteers come out, and the timing was great for bringing all the different local community agencies together, "said Mr. Berger.

Some of the agencies that attended the event were: Head Start, Zia Therapy and Parents Reaching Out. The event also featured carnival games, face painting, a petting zoo, pony rides and a puppet show.

"It was really great to help the children, but we also wanted to recognize their families as well because autism affects not only the children but their families too," said Mr. Berger.

The event was organized around the idea of giving thanks to families for all they do, said Heather Miller, a school liaison officer.

"Reaching out to the families was one of my main priorities. There are not too many events out there like this, and I hope that we provided a memorable experience for those involved," said Mrs. Miller.

Mr. Berger also said the event couldn't have taken place without the help of all the participating agencies, Mrs. Miller and Ms. Susan Hunter.

Tentative plans have been made to host a similar event in the fall. For more information on EFMP or A&FRC events please call 572-7754 or see their calendar of events on Force Support Squadron Website at www.hollomanfss.com.
