The German Air Force Flying Training Center took home the 2010 Base Volleyball Championship April 30 with a win against the 49th Force Support Squadron Team A.

The final scores after two sets in the double-elimination tournament were 25-15 and 25-20.

Although the score was close in both games, one GAF Flying Training Center player thought the echoes of encouragement helped them with the win.

"I think I brought them to victory with my cheering," joked Robert Meints of the GAF FTC team. "The FSS team was cheering 'Who brings it best? FSS!' And we were cheering 'Wir wollen Punkte!' (We want points). In the gym was a feeling like a big festival. It was very loud."

The GAF Flying Training Center also rang victorious in the preseason tournament where they took first place, followed by their championship run where they went undefeated. A few games were close though, including their game against their fellow Germans in the GAF 1st Line Maintenance team.

"It was so close but we had a little bit more luck. That's the reason we won," said Meints.

The second place winners, the 49th FSS team A, came close in both the preseason and championship tournaments. One player attributed their volleyball success to the team work of the 49th FSS.

"We were a very good team because we played good together, we meshed well, everybody was a team player on our team and everyone always picked everyone up," said Ken Weir, one 49th FSS team A player. "Even when we lost we were still patting each other on the back -- feeling the pain -- but still we picked each other up and we did our best."

The Domenici Fitness and Sports Center volleyball season concluded with the April 30th championship game. The softball preseason will kick off with a preseason tournament on May 3. For more information, call the fitness center at 572-2529.
