Firefighters deliver pizza, fire safety message Published March 11, 2010 By 49th Fighter Wing Public Affairs HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- How can a national pizza franchise and six Air Combat Command Fire Departments increase home fire safety awareness? Fire safety literature, firefighters, fire trucks and the potential for a free pizza is a good start! On Sunday, March 14, randomly selected on-base pizza orders will be delivered with base fire officials and if the selected home has working fire and smoke detectors, the order is free. If not, the firefighters will change the batteries and make sure it is in working order. The campaign by ACC Fire Departments and the 49th Civil Engineer Squadron's Fire Department will increase customer awareness by testing home fire safety detection devices at base housing. "This a great way to emphasize the importance of Fire Safety Awareness in the home, specifically with regards to ensuring that our military families have 100 percent serviceable smoke detectors in their homes on Holloman," said Chief Wayne Mello, 49th Civil Engineer Squadron fire chief. "Smoke detectors save lives, so it's important to ensure the battery is changed regularly." The ACC Civil Engineer Fire Departments at Ellsworth AFB, S.D., Moody AFB, Ga., Seymour-Johnson AFB, N.C., Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz. and Beale AFB, Calif., will also take part in the campaign. "This is a perfect opportunity since it's the start of Daylight Saving Time to educate the public about testing fire and smoke alarms, and overall fire safety practices at base housing," said Chief Master Sgt. Mike Rosser, ACC A7 Fire Emergency Services functional manager. Fire safety awareness is a nationwide campaign of the National Fire Protection Association. Departments focus fire prevention efforts at the beginning of Daylight Saving Time in mid-March and again in October during Fire Prevention Week. All pizzas delivered this week by the pizza franchise include a flyer of fire safety tips for smoke alarms and fire escape route planning. The number of potentially free pizzas on March 14 varies depending on the local franchises. For more information, contact the 49th CES Fire Department at 575-572-7228.
