The 2009 Combined Federal Campaign kicked off Sept. 30 with a "We can" attitude, a burger burn and a few local organizations looking for a donation at the Domenici Fitness and Sports Center here.

The campaign runs for six weeks and this year's goal is $80,000.

Col. Jeff Harrigian, 49th Fighter Wing commander, said last year's goal was $70,000 and the base raised $105,000, therefore, this year's goal shouldn't be a problem.

However, he said he's not worried about the money, because this is what Holloman does -- the base is a giving community.

The wing commander stressed that donating is not a must do, but 100 percent contact is a must. He wants every supervisor to take five minutes to talk to their young Airmen to show them the organizations so they know the facts.

This year's theme, "We can," signifies that no matter how much you donate, even if it is a little, it can still go a long way.

Kathy Denton, CFC chairperson also of the National Park Service at White Sands, said as little as one dollar a day can feed a child in a third world country for a week. Ten dollars a month could feed a family of four in a developing country.

"It doesn't sound like a lot," she said. "But it is."

She said people can do it any way they like. They can donate what they can, and to whoever they think needs the money.

Unit POCs will be making their rounds through duty sections to make sure 100 percent contact is made, and to make sure everyone has the chance to donate if they wish.
