The 2009 base golf championship was held at Apache Mesa Golf Course Aug. 21 through Aug. 23 and at the end of the three-day competition, a new base champion was announced.

Tommie Williams, who has been golfing here for more than 17 years, won the championship with a three-day total of 230 strikes, 14 over a par of 216.

In winning this year's championship, Mr. Williams dethroned John Gibson, 49th Civil Engineer Squadron, who held the top spot for the past two years. He not only topped the other nine in the Championship Flight, he also beat 14 other golfers from two other flights, First and Senior, to win the overall championship.

The First Flight winner was Robert Sturtz with a score of 246. Robert showed consistency as he shot 82 all three days, 30 strokes over par.

Finally, the Senior Flight Champion for 2009 was Tom Garrison. Mr. Garrison, the former Apache Mesa greens superintendent, came in with three day total of 245, 29 over par.

Congratulations to all contestants and thank you to Desert Sun Motors, an event sponsor, for making this year's event one to remember for years to come.
