However the 49th Materiel Maintenance Support Squadron at Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., has the distinct honor of being the 2008 recipient of this award. The 49 MMSS was selected by ACC in mid-January - making this the sixth time the squadron has won the award. Though the unit name and the title of the award have changed over time, the 49th MMSS continues a proud tradition having previously won in 1981, 1986, 1988, 2002 and 2004. "Our squadron works hard because our nation needs our best effort just like they need it from everyone else in the Air Force," said Chief Master Sergeant James Kruse, 49 MMSS. "It's all about holding true to the Air Force Core Value of pursuing excellence in all we do. The 49 MMSS is best known for their unique mission as the Air Force's sole squadron capable of maintaining, storing and deploying Basic Expeditionary Airfield Resources equipment worldwide. They currently have airmen deployed to care for BEAR equipment and other missions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. "I can attribute the success of winning this award to the hard work and effort of the stellar airmen in the 49th Material Maintenance Support Squadron. As the commander, I feel a great sense of pride to know I work alongside some dynamic men and women," said Capt. Sisto Ortiz, 49 MMSS commander. The 49 MMSS will go on to compete at the Air Force level where they hope to bring home the title of U.S. Air Force Logistics Readiness Squadron Non -Flying Unit of the Year.
