Members of Team Holloman went back to middle school to take part in the PRIDE Program. The program teaches students about Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Excellence. Together these qualities make the framework of Falcon PRIDE.

For six months a year, mentors volunteer to interact with a class to discuss the meaning of "PRIDE" and what the acronyms for the each letter represent. The mentors share stories and ideas that demonstrate to students how each characteristic can positively influence them. Students have the opportunity to ask questions about how each word relates to them and what they could do to reach their goals.

"It's been an honor to be part of the PRIDE program for the last two years. Not only can I see the kids are excited when we come to speak to them, but the students also teach me so much. I walk away each time having learned something new and wonderful about them, their families, the school and our base," said Lt. Col. Angela Suplisson, 846th Test Squadron commander.

The Falcon PRIDE Program was introduced to Holloman Middle School in 2003 by then Vice Wing Commander's wife, Mrs. Silvia Papp. After leaving Holloman, the program was handed over to volunteers to keep it going. Master Sgt. John Bratton, 49th Fighter Wing FOD Manager, and his wife, Margo Bratton, undertook the program in 2006 and have been coordinating it since.

"When you see the connection between the students and the mentors you know the program is working and the meaning of 'PRIDE' is getting across. They see the teachers as 'authority figures,' but when they hear it from 'real people,' they can relate to them on a personal level," said Sergeant Bratton.

All military and civilian personnel are welcome to volunteer in the PRIDE program. Active duty members of Team Holloman make up 99 percent of volunteers and their ranks vary from Airman Basic to Colonel. Mentors, who have not PCSed or deployed, return year after year to promote strong character development for the students.

"When you talk to the kids, you yourself grow in a professional and personal manner because you impart your wisdom," said Sergeant Bratton. Sergeant Bratton said he feels even if it only impacts one kid, the program is worthwhile.

In addition to mentors speaking to students, teachers from each grade award one student who best represents Falcon PRIDE, with a special coin. The coin was designed by students and carries a strong connection to the tradition of the Air Force. Each year, an eighth grade Falcon PRIDE boy and Falcon PRIDE girl are awarded "Falcon of the Year" on a traveling trophy to honor their accomplishments.

"The experience you share with each student is definitely something you'll never forget and one the students will always remember. If we desire change and want excellence for our future, then it is our responsibility to guide them onto the right path. The PRIDE Program is a wonderful source and avenue to make a difference," said Senior Master Sgt. Sonya Stoute, 49th Fighter Wing Protocol superintendent.
