The Holloman Veterinary Treatment Facility is actively involved in providing information to the 49th Fighter Wing Community on the Food and Drug Administration's pet food recalls.

The FDA has recently posted recalls of pet foods containing peanut butter that may have been contaminated with Salmonella Typhimurium. The following is from the FDA website:

"Product recalls now include some pet food products that contain peanut paste that was made by Peanut Corporation of America. While the risk of animals contracting salmonellosis is minimal, there is risk to humans from handling these products. It is important for people to wash their hands and make sure children wash their hands before and, especially, after feeding treats to pets. Further information for consumers is located in the Frequently Asked Questions section located on this web site. The pet food products are also included in the searchable data base of recalled products."

Although the risk for animals is minimal, please watch for the following symptoms in your pet:

"Pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Well animals can be carriers and infect other animals or humans."

A list of recalled products is posted on the FDA website at http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/peanutbutterrecall/index.cfm#PetFood and frequently asked questions by consumers about the peanut butter recall for both human and pet food can be found at http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/salmonellatyph/faq.html.
