U.S. Air Force Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for Lake Holloman Recreational Area Development Published Jan. 27, 2009 By Wesley Westphal 49 CES/CEAO HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- The 49 Fighter Wing has prepared a Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and Draft Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) analyzing the potential impacts of the development of a water recreation area at Lake Holloman on Holloman Air Force Base (AFB), New Mexico. The proposed action would involve the construction of new recreational facilities around Lake Holloman and Lagoon G, allowing new activities such as fishing, RV and ATV use, camping, and boating. These activities would be in addition to current waterfowl hunting and bird watching activities. Approximately 3 acres along Lake Holloman are proposed for the construction of a group event pavilion, boat rental facility, restroom facilities, primitive and improved camping areas, nature trails, and a beach area. In support of these new facilities, included in the proposed action, are improvements to existing roads and parking areas. The 49 Fighter Wing will also evaluate the environmental impacts associated with an alternative in which fishing would not be permitted in Lagoon G and Lake Holloman would be developed for the remaining recreational activities. A no action alternative, under which Lake Holloman would continue to be used as a limited recreational area, will also be evaluated.
