Sail Away Published Sept. 9, 2008 By Senior Airman Tiffany Trojca 49 FW/PA HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Members of Team Holloman will soon be able to sail the high seas in New Mexico thanks to a new quality of life initiative being spearheaded by the Outdoor Recreation Center. The Outdoor Recreation is ordering two catamaran boats to be used by Department of Defense card holders, including dependants. The new boats, costing $11,000, will be equipped with trailer hitches and seat two and four persons respectively. "The boats are easy to use, comfortable, and stable. They are ideal for new sailors and experienced sailors of all ages," said Ms. Cleveann DeMotta, 49th Force Support Squadron deputy director. Although the boats are user friendly, the Outdoor Recreation Center will be offering a Learn to Sail program when Raptor Lake and the Recreation Area are operational. Once the boats are available for rent, customers can hitch the boat trailer to their vehicles and drive off to any of the area lakes to enjoy a day of sailing. "This is a great family activity that will be found at very few bases other than Holloman," said Maj. Kurt Mencke, 49th Force Support Squadron commander. Some of the local lakes include Elephant Butte, Lake Bonita, Lake Caballo, and Grindstone Lake in Ruidoso. For more information call Outdoor Rec. at 572-5369.
