Labor Day safety message from ACC commander Published Aug. 28, 2008 By General John D.W. Corley Air Combat Command LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. -- This Labor Day weekend we honor the American worker, whose contributions have made our nation strong. Labor Day also marks the end of summer, and of our "101 Critical Days of Summer" safety campaign. During the upcoming weekend, many of our Airmen, will be enjoying a much deserved break. For some, this holiday weekend represents an opportunity to enjoy the last remaining days of summer with their families before school resumes. Many of our Airmen will take to the highways to enjoy one more vacation...this is where you come in. Historically, the leading causes in highway fatalities include: poor personal choices, poor risk management, and misplaced attention. The good news is every one of these factors can be mitigated by fostering the strong Leader/Wingman culture. I ask that you create an opportunity to readdress the dangers of highway travel before you release your Airmen this weekend. Reinforce the proper use of seat belts, getting enough rest, using a designated driver, traveling at safe speeds, and wearing proper motorcycle attire. Look your Airmen in the eye and make sure they get the message! ACC has already suffered two fatalities during our "101 Critical Days of Summer," campaign ... I want these to be the last! I need you to be proactive about safety in your organizations. Make sure our Airmen, their friends, and their family members, all return safely.
