The golf course is being given 130k for upgrades to improve the golfing experience here. "As every die hard golfer knows, the quality of the greens affects the quality of the game. This project will ensure that Apache Mesa's greens are the highest quality possible," said Maj. Kurt Mencke, 49th Force Support Squadron commander. The project, funded by the 49th Fighter Wing, Air Combat Command and non appropriated funds, has an estimated completion time of late November. The contractor will be replacing the manual irrigation system with an ultra high frequency/radio frequency system in addition the sprinklers will be set on a timed schedule and controlled by a computer system. "Other improvements include but are not limited to redressing, reshaping, re-sanding and edging all existing bunkers as well as creating nine new sand bunkers throughout the course. Also included in the plan is to level out the tee-boxes and install 22 mature shrubs and trees," said Mark Doinoff, Director of Golf. However, frequent golfers need not worry. According to Major Mencke, the renovations will have minimal impact on those who want to enjoy the greens during upgrades.
