Holloman AFB's first annual Biggest Loser weight loss competition kicked off here at 2 p.m. July 12.

The main purpose of the competition is to promote safe weight loss. Loosely based on the television show, the competition is being hosted by the 49th Force Support Squadron and is open to military and civilians 18 and older.

"I believe the Biggest Loser competition is important to the people involved because it is giving them the opportunity to get started on a road to changing lifestyle habits that may be hindering them to be the people they want to be," said Tech Sgt. Joya Stotz, 49th FSS.

17 four man teams will compete for nearly three months to safely lose the most percentage of body weight and become the overall biggest loser.

"The team concept will help them be more amped to come workout and it will provide them more people to push them which will help them lose more weight in the end," said Sergeant Joya Stotz.

Additionally the teams will be awarded several points for attending classes and various other activities the fitness center will host.

The contestants will also receive points for keeping track of what they eat in nutrition logs, which was provided by the Health and Wellness Center.

"There will be a variety of different things that can benefit all health levels and get everybody motivated to participate," said Sergeant Stotz.

The teams participated in an initial weigh-in and will receive one once a week until the end of the competition.

"I think this program is awesome, it's great to be involved in a program like this. The goal is to inspire, and if someone doing this competition inspires just one person that is a definite added bonus," said Master Sgt. Kevin Hartsock, NCOIC of the Health and Wellness Center.

The participants will be competing for team awards as well as individual prizes along the way, with a monthly challenge determining the "team of the month."
