Quality of life matters to dormitory residents Published Aug. 5, 2008 By Senior Airman Anthony Nelson Jr 49th Fighter Wing Public Affairs HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- As part of a new quality of life initiative for Airmen at Holloman, each dormitory on base recently received $2,000 to use toward quality of life improvements. This dormitory project is among several to come in the next few weeks and, according to 49th Fighter Wing leadership, is intended to help raise the standard of living for the dorm residents. "This is all about taking care of our Airmen and improving their quality of life," said Col. Jeff Harrigian, 49 FW commander. According to Chief Master Sgt. Jeffrey Cui, 49 FW command chief, taking care of the dorms is an ongoing quality of life project because Airmen are always going to need quality living quarters. "The dorms are always a quality of life issue at any base because that's where our young, single Airmen live and they don't get a choice," he said. "We ask a lot of our Airmen, so the least we can do is ensure they have a nice, comfortable place to go home to after working long hours." Since money was given to each individual dorm, dorm residents will decide amongst themselves what they would like to improve on or replace. "I believe the dorm residents will use the money to take care of current dayrooms or upgrade furniture," said Ms. Marianne Jackson, unaccompanied housing superintendent. "Many of the dorm residents are stoked about the recent quality of life incentive being given to their dorm." Chief Cui also said taking care of the Airmen and to maintaining good morale are key elements to success. "Being able to take care of the people who work for you is, in my opinion, a very important piece of the puzzle," he said. "Providing money for the dorm raises morale by meeting the Airmen's needs and wants and also builds confidence in them that their leadership listens to them and will follow through." Having comfortable dorms for our Airmen to live in provides them with a place to rest, relax and enjoy their off time."
