New Mexico State University recently came together with Holloman Air Force Base and young people from across the U.S. to create a youth football camp, at the Sports and Fitness Center here.

Mr. Harry Miller 49th Force Support Squadron, youth sports director, was given the opportunity to get involved with the youth, and contacted the marketing coordinator at NMSU to get things started.

"It's a unique opportunity for the kids and the fact that they get to meet college students that are excelling in life, is wonderful," said Mr. Miller.

Football players and coaches from NMSU volunteered their time to come help teach the children football skills and perform drills.

"Our coach came to us and said they were going to hold a youth camp at Holloman, so I think a lot of us looked forward to this football camp," said Chase Holbrook, Quarterback for NMSU. "It's fun to get out, the kids have fun and I think it's just a unique opportunity for them."

The kids came from many different places such as California, Texas, New Jersey, and New Mexico to participate in the camp.

"The kids were so curious and excited to come here; they think Holloman is such an oasis," said Ms. Suzanne Walter, marketing coordinator for NMSU athletics.

"I think it's important to be able to be role models or set examples for the youth, whether it's on Holloman or it happens to be in the community," said Ms. Walter.

"Setting examples at an early age really motivates young kids to want to go to college, play sports and know there are scholarship opportunities available. "

This is just the start of the youth programs involving NMSU at Holloman, plans are already in the works for a basketball camp as well. The football camp is planned for next year as well.
