Airmen invade airwaves

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. --  Those recently grooving and jamming to their favorite tunes on 94 Key may have been surprised to hear some of Holloman Air Force Base's young Airmen making their voices heard on the airwaves.

Senior Airman Jacob Johnson and Airman 1st Class Johanna Schwenzig, both from the 49th Maintenance Squadron, had the privilege of visiting a local radio station in Alamogordo, N.M., May 20.

The visit included a tour of the station, meeting radio personalities and, even, going on live air.

"It was kind of nerve wrecking knowing we're representing Holloman Air Force Base," said Airman Johnson. "It was a big thrill and enjoyable at the same time though."

The Airmen were given a chance to speak about their jobs and explain exactly what they do on base and how it relates to the mission. They also had the chance to learn how a radio station works.

The opportunity came about when Airman Johnson was listening to the radio and heard James "Double J" White, Burt Broadcasting operations manager and 94 Key DJ, was at a local car dealership. He stopped by the dealership, introduced himself to Double J and asked if visiting the station was something he could do.

"It's always interesting to see people from other jobs and fields of expertise come in and see what broadcasting and radio is about," Double J said.

Despite the obvious tension that may arise from being on live radio and knowing her voice was being heard by many people in the community, Airman Schwenzig was able to find a place of relaxation and easiness due to the warm welcome-ship she received from the radio station employees.

"They're really cool guys," Airman Schwenzig said. "They're really laid back, they're easy to talk to and they make you laugh."

Having a great personality is key in being in the radio industry, said Airman Schwenzig, who believes that is why she and Airman Johnson were brought in with open arms. The radio station staff did have other reasons for showing such kindness though.

"I think that America's military is critical in keeping our country safe and is a vital employer for folks," Double J said. "Any and all missions that Holloman gets are beneficial to the Tularosa Basin and New Mexico in general. I appreciate our listenership at Holloman Air Force Base and anytime anyone at Holloman wants to come over here to the radio station, take a tour and get on the microphone, we're at your disposal."

Airman Johnson and Schwenzig aren't the only members of Team Holloman who have invaded the 94 Key airways though. Every first Friday of the month 94 Key hosts a segment called the Commander's Corner with Col. Jeff Harrigian, 49th Fighter Wing commander.

Also, from June 2 to June 6, representatives from the 49th Operations Group and 49th Maintenance Group are scheduled to appear on 94 Key to speak on what Holloman has done in preparation for the arrival of the F-22A Raptor.

In addition to that, there will be an F-22 demo June 6 over Alamogordo, N.M., and the demo team announcer will broadcast live on 94 Key giving commentaries.
