Members of Team Holloman recognized more than 180 volunteers at the 2007 Volunteer Awards ceremony held at the Enlisted Club June 19.

All together, the volunteers had 38,598 hours, equating to $198,779 if calculated by the Alamogordo minimum wage, said Ms. Shirley Bratton, Airman and Family Readiness Center community readiness technician.

"Our volunteers do so much," said Ms. Bratton. "And they don't do it to get anything in return."

All the volunteers are affiliated with Holloman in some way or another, either as an active-duty member, retiree, civilian or dependent, and have volunteered 50 hours or more during the designated time frame which was April 2006 to April 2007.

Many of the volunteers did work for the base chapel and pharmacy, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Otero County, Habitat for Humanity, 572-RIDE, flood relief and other organizations in need of volunteer services.

During the ceremony, two volunteers were recognized and given an angel pin. Those volunteers went above and beyond the minimum recognition requirements throughout the year, said Ms. Bratton.

"Volunteering is exciting and gratifying for me," said Ms. Terri Bullard, an angel pin recipient. "I find more enjoyment in volunteering than in a job with a paycheck."

Ms. Bullard volunteered over 1,800 hours at the chapel and with 572-RIDE.

Ms. Dixie Scharon, the other angel pin recipient, volunteers for Holloman because she appreciates the sacrifice military members give every day. She volunteered more than 150 hours of her time at the 49th Medical Group.

"Our volunteers are the perfect gift, with no strings attached," said Ms. Lenn Furrow, AFRC director. "When you give your time is when it is the most valuable."
