Health Promotion and the Airman and Family Readiness Center at Holloman will soon be hosting two events to raise awareness for heart disease and issues related to it.

Feb.18, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. there will be a class called Healthy Hearts for Men. The class will educate participants about signs and symptoms of heart disease, medications that help keep the disease in check, nutrition facts for how to stay healthy and prevent onset of the disease, as well as points for physical activity to keep a strong healthy heart.

Feb. 26, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. there will be a class called Go Red for Women which will consist of the same topics taught in Healthy Hearts for Men.

The Go Red for Women program is based off of a popular American Heart Association program under the same name, which was held Feb. 6, prompting individuals to wear red in support of those suffering from heart disease.

Heart disease is the number one killer in America and accounts for more than half of the deaths that occur worldwide.

Men and women are susceptible to heart disease, but due to differences between the male and female bodies, women develop the disease seven to ten years later than men.  According to an article written by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, this leads to the misconception that females are protected against cardiovascular disease.

"Heart disease has a high mortality rate and should not be underestimated, which is why we are hosting these classes," said Juli Bailey, Health Promotion coordinator. "When lives are at stake, especially our Airmen's lives, we cannot become complacent."

Those who attend the classes will receive one credit towards Comprehensive Airman Fitness. For more information contact Juli Bailey, Health promotion, at 575-572-5785.
