9/11 remembrance
HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE, N.M. -- Students from Holloman Middle School watch members of the 49th Communication Squadron attach the Freedom Flag, Sept. 10, 2010, which was raised in remembrance of the terrorist attacks Sept. 11, 2001. The Freedom Flag was created when a restaurant owner in Virginia, Richard Melito, decided to sketch out a symbol that he felt paid tribute to and honored everyone who lost and risked their lives. Twelve months later, he created a non-profit organization called the Freedom Flag Foundation. The Freedom Flag features two broad red stripes, symbolizing the Twin Towers and the sacrifices of those at the World Trade Center during the attacks, three white stripes in memory of the rescue workers, firefighters, police officers and others who responded to the attacks; and two smaller red stripes to honor the crew and passengers who lost their lives aboard the hijacked aircrafts that day, nine years ago. Sled park preserves high-speed history
HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Sleds that were once used in ejection seat tests on the Holloman High Speed Test Track sit in the 846th Test Squadron "bone yard," July 16, 2010. One or more of these sleds will be refurbished and displayed at the Sled Park, as part of the complete 13-sled exhibit. The idea behind the building of the sled park was to preserve the history of the 846th TS and to allow Team Holloman members to check out that history in a safe way. Sled park preserves high-speed history
HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- A commemorative 50th Anniversary replica sled of "The Fastest Man On Earth," Col. John Paul Stapp, is displayed at the 846th Test Squadron Sled Park July 16, 2010. In 1954, Colonel Stapp rode on the Holloman High Speed Test Track at 632 miles per hour, and came to a dead stop in 1.4 seconds. He was subjected to more than 40 times the pull of gravity proving that this kind of deceleration could be survived. The 50th Anniversary commemorative sled was designed to replicate the sled Colonel Stapp rode in the original ride -- the "Sonic Wind." (U.S. Air Force photo by Senior Airman Sondra Escutia)
