5 Sun Safety Tips
Tip #1: Stay hydrated. Prolonged exposure to sun can cause dehydration, which can prevent the body from regulating its temperature, leading to heat stress and stroke. Drinking plenty of water keeps your body cool and improves muscle and joint function. (U.S. Air Force photo illustration by Airman 1st Class Aaron Montoya)

Northrup Strip landing proud moment
The White Sands Space Harbor, which was once called Northrup Strip, consists of two operational runways that are 35,000 feet long (approximately 6.6 miles) and 900 feet wide and are built on a salt flat area between the San Andres Mountains on the west and the Sacramento Mountains on the east. White Sands Space Harbor/Northrup Strip was normally held as the emergency landing site during the Space Shuttle Program should the shuttle need an immediate return to Earth after the first orbit. The added benefit of color, size and near-perfect weather meant astronauts could see the strip from space, making it an easy target to hit if an emergency arose. Northrup Strip landing proud moment
The Northrup Strip at White Sands Missile Range was the landing site for STS-3. The strip, which was renamed in 1982 to White Sands Space Harbor, is located between the San Andres Mountains on the west and the Sacramento Mountains on the east. This area is known as Alkali Flats, which is part of the now-dry Lake Otero, a lake that filled the bottom of the Tularosa Basin during the last ice age. The area provides “excellent margins of safety” on the compacted salt and gypsum. (photo courtesy of 49th Wing History Office)

STS-3 crew
The Space Shuttle Columbia is hoisted into place by cranes at White Sands Northrup Strip. Columbia made the first, and only, shuttle landing at the New Mexico facility in March 1982 during STS-3. The shuttle was flown by Astronaut C. Gordon Fullerton, who passed away Wednesday, Aug. 21, at the age of 76. The fine gypsum sand battered the spacecraft so harshly that despite a deep cleaning and years of use, the sand was still found on subsequent missions.
