Photos: Keeping aircraft safe with non-destructive inspections
Senior Airman Roderick Johnson, 49th Maintenance Squadron non-destructive inspection technician, prepares a metal bracket for a closer inspection under fluorescent lighting at Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., June 30. The item is dipped in a very low viscosity penetrant which fills any voids left by cracks or damage and indicates a need for repair. After the penetrant is applied, it is placed on a surface for a specific period of time to allow the penetrant to create a visible indication of damage, afterward the part is carefully cleaned. NDI technicians are able to assist aircraft maintainers by identifying damage to aircraft parts in a non-destructive manner, allowing them to ensure military aviation equipment safety.
