WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, N.M. -- A participant of the 21st Annual Bataan Memorial Death March receives medical attention at one of five medical stations along the 26.2 mile trail, March 21, 2010. The Bataan Memorial Death March commemorates the Bataan Death March which occurred in the Philippines during World War II. On April 9, 1942, 75,000 Army, Army Air Corps, Navy, Marine and Filipino soldiers were surrendered to Japanese forces. Forced to march 60 miles in the sweltering heat through the Philippine jungles, thousands of soldiers died in transit to prisoner-of-war camps.
