Medal of Honor
Richard Ira "Dick" Bong (Sept. 24, 1920 - Aug. 6, 1945) is the United States' highest-scoring ace, having shot down 40 Japanese aircraft during World War II, and is a Medal of Honor recipient. He was a fighter pilot in the U.S. Army Air Forces assigned to the 49th Pursuit Group (now the 49th Fighter Wing at Holloman Air Force Base, N.M.). His portrait hangs in the wing headquarters building along with photos from his days as a "Fightin' Forty-Niner." (U.S. Air Force photo/Airman 1st Class Veronica Salgado)
