Richard Ira "Dick" Bong (Sept. 24, 1920 - Aug. 6, 1945) is the United States' highest-scoring ace, having shot down 40 Japanese aircraft during World War II, and is a Medal of Honor recipient. He was a fighter pilot in the U.S. Army Air Forces assigned to the 49th Pursuit Group (now the 49th Fighter Wing at Holloman Air Force Base, N.M.).
